Pam Ahern

Founder/Director of Edgar's Mission

Pam’s lifelong passion for animals started as a child, rescuing stray cats and dogs, and evolved into founding the Central Highlands Animal Shelter with her mother. In 2003, Pam made a life-changing decision to leave behind a successful equestrian career after rescuing Edgar, a pig destined for slaughter, during the Save Babe campaign.

This moment ignited Pam’s mission to challenge societal norms about farmed animals and to raise awareness about the cruelty inherent in their treatment. Since then, Edgar’s Mission has grown to become home to more than 450 rescued farm animals. The sanctuary not only provides a safe haven but also educates the public through free tours and outreach programs, encouraging compassion for all living beings.

Pam’s dedication to the animals has earned her recognition as an Australian Ambassador for World Animal Day and a finalist for the Victorian Local Hero award in 2014. Through Edgar’s Mission, she continues to spread the message that every animal, regardless of species, deserves kindness, respect, and protection. Pam believes in the power of storytelling, advocacy, and education to inspire lasting change in the way animals are perceived and treated.

Her favourite quote perfectly encapsulates her journey: “I may not have found where I intended to go, but I think I ended up where I needed to be.”
