Greg McFarlane

Director of Vegan Australia

Greg’s journey into veganism began over 30 years ago, sparked by the harsh realities of the egg and dairy industries. Initially a software developer by profession, his passion for animal rights and veganism soon became a driving force in his life. For more than 15 years, Greg has been an active advocate for animal liberation, including serving as a former committee member and president of Vegan NSW.

In 2014, recognizing the growing need for a national voice for veganism across the country, Greg helped found Vegan Australia, a registered charity dedicated to promoting the rights of our fellow animals through veganism. His vision is rooted in the belief that every animal has the right to their own body, life and freedom and that both people and institutions must be encouraged and supported to respect those rights.

Greg frequently engages with the media and government, speaking out on a wide range of topics from public health to environmental sustainability, animal rights and the future of agriculture. His work is driven by a commitment to creating systemic change—making veganism more mainstream, convenient and accessible for everyone.

On the international stage, Greg has represented Vegan Australia as part of the International Vegan Rights Alliance and played a pivotal role in founding the Vegan World Alliance, fostering collaboration between like-minded organizations worldwide. His enduring belief is that through cooperation, the rights of animals can be best protected, both at home and globally.

This dish is not only delicious, it saved me from going hungry when living in Japan – I would simply ask the chef at the restaurant near my work to leave out the meat.
