Nicola Rae

Founder, Amaroo Wildlife Shelter

Meet Nicola, a compassionate advocate for wildlife and the heart behind Amaroo Wildlife Shelter, a haven dedicated to rehabilitating sick, injured, and orphaned Australian native animals. With a Wildlife Rehabilitation License obtained from the state government, Nicola founded Amaroo several years ago, driven by an unwavering passion for all creatures great and small.

Nestled in her home, Amaroo Wildlife Shelter operates as a small hospital, featuring a garden full of aviaries and pens where dedicated foster carers and volunteers join Nicola in her mission. Together, they work tirelessly to provide care for a diverse array of Australian wildlife, including wombats, kangaroos, brushtail and ringtail possums, sugar gliders, and various bird species.

Nicola’s shelter is a labour of love, filled with the sounds of nurturing and healing. Her living spaces are transformed into a sanctuary for young joeys and other animals in need, showcasing her deep commitment to the animals. With no government funding, Nicola relies on the generosity of supporters who share her vision of compassion for all living beings.

With a background as a Vet Nurse, Nicola combines her professional expertise with her profound dedication to wildlife rescue. She envisions a future where Amaroo Wildlife Shelter continues to be a beacon of hope for Australia’s unique fauna, fostering a greater understanding of the importance of wildlife conservation.

Through her work, Nicola inspires others to recognize the beauty and fragility of our native wildlife and the crucial role we all play in protecting them.

Nicola’s chosen recipe

The recipe I have chosen is an Ikarian Longevity Stew. This dish is on high rotation in our household because our three year old River always eats it. It’s delicious. Highly nutritious and filled with sweet rich flavours.
