Kristy is a passionate animal activist and spokesperson for Animal Liberation Tasmania, where she leads campaigns like Defund Tasracing, aiming to expose the cruelty behind Tasmania’s greyhound racing industry. Known for her fearless commitment to the cause, Kristy has spoken at major events like the Dominion Marches, Vegan Festival Adelaide, and the Farm Transparency Project’s Big Pig Vigil. She has been arrested six times in defense of forests and animals, viewing that civil disobedience is essential to achieving true animal liberation. Her efforts have also been pivotal in exposing cruelty within the greyhound racing industry, resulting in multiple trainers being held accountable.
Kristy’s activism stems from her early influences—her grandmother Maumie, an animal rescuer, and her exposure to the Australian live export scandal of 2011, as well as impactful documentaries like The Cove. She became vegan in 2012 and quickly became involved in animal rights investigations, operating a rabbit rescue and joining the leadership of Animal Liberation Tasmania. In 2017, she co-founded Tasmanian Animal Save, further cementing her role as a leading voice for animals in Tasmania.
In addition to her activism, Kristy is a gifted writer with an honours degree in Ancient Latin Literature. She excels at using her words to create compelling arguments for animal rights, allowing her to become a powerful voice in the movement. This talent shines through in her book Five Essays for Freedom, an exposé of the animal industrial complex. Kristy’s essays provide a political primer for both new and experienced advocates, urging the animal rights movement to go beyond consumerism and confront the intricate webs of corporate and governmental exploitation. Her work challenges traditional notions of animal advocacy and paves the way for a revolution in how we fight for animal justice.
I have chosen a simple tabouli and white bean dip, as an affordable and nutritious meal that fosters community feasting. I learned how to make this tabouli from Nagham, a beautiful human I met through work with the Tasmanian Palestinian Advocacy Network, and every time I make it I feel the immersive sense of solidarity and community this organisation has fostered amongst so many different groups.
